Water Change Calculator for Nitrate
See how nitrate, phosphate or any dissolved parameter falls after a water change of a given size, how many changes it takes to reach your target, and how much water to swap.

Assumes the water is well mixed and nothing is added or consumed between changes. In a real tank nitrate keeps rising between changes, so the reading rebounds.
How much a water change lowers nitrate
A water change removes a share of whatever is dissolved in the water, then adds replacement water. If you swap a fraction f of the water, the new reading is:
new = old × (1 − f) + replacement × f
With RODI the replacement reading is 0, so a 25% change leaves 75% of the nitrate. With tap water that has 10 ppm of nitrate, the replacement term adds a little back, and it sets a floor: you can never get below the nitrate in the new water.
| Water change | After one change | After four changes | Changes to reach 10 ppm |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10% | 36 ppm | 26.2 ppm | 14 |
| 20% | 32 ppm | 16.4 ppm | 7 |
| 25% | 30 ppm | 12.7 ppm | 5 |
| 30% | 28 ppm | 9.6 ppm | 4 |
| 50% | 20 ppm | 2.5 ppm | 2 |
Why one big change doesn’t clear everything
Each change removes a share of what is left, not a fixed amount. Three 25% changes do not remove 75%. They leave 42% of the starting nitrate, because each change works on a smaller number. Even a 50% change only halves the reading.
To bring a high reading down, you can do a larger change if the tank can take it, or repeat smaller ones a few days apart. Large changes shift salinity, temperature and pH all at once, so match the new water to the tank first.
What the calculator leaves out
It assumes the water is perfectly mixed and nothing is added or consumed between changes. In a real tank, fish keep producing nitrate and algae, plants and bacteria consume it, so the reading starts rising again as soon as you finish. Rock and substrate also hold some nitrate and release it slowly.
Use the numbers as a plan, then test a day or two after the change to see where the tank really landed. Count the sump and plumbing in your system volume.
Works for any dissolved parameter
The same sum applies to phosphate, TDS, and any other dissolved substance with the same unit for all three readings. It does not apply to things the tank produces or uses continuously, like alkalinity in a reef tank that is being consumed by corals.
Frequently asked questions
What water change percentage lowers nitrate by half?
A 50% change with RODI cuts a reading in half in one go. Smaller changes get there in steps: for example, three 20% changes leave about 51% and four 20% changes leave about 41%.
How many 25% water changes does it take to get nitrate from 40 ppm to 10 ppm?
Five. Each 25% change leaves 75% of the nitrate, so four changes leave 12.7 ppm and a fifth brings it to 9.5 ppm.
Does a water change remove all the nitrate?
No. A change removes only the share of water you swap. Whatever is left in the tank, and whatever is in the replacement water, remains.
How much does a 20% water change lower nitrate?
By 20% with RODI, so 40 ppm becomes 32 ppm. Using tap water that has nitrate of its own lowers it a little less.
How often should I do a water change?
Many keepers swap about 10 to 25 percent a week. The right size and timing depend on how quickly nitrate and phosphate build up in your tank, which your own tests will show.
What if my tap water has nitrate?
Enter the tap reading as the replacement water. The calculator then shows the lowest you can reach, which is the nitrate in the new water. If your target is lower than that, you need RODI.
